Deer are ruminant mammals. A group of deer is a herd. They live in a variety of habitats ranging from tundra to tropical rainforest. Male deer shed their antlers each year. A pregnant doe will generally produce one or two fawns. The average gestation period is ten months. Most fawns are born with their fur covered with white spots, though in many species they lose these spots by the end of their first winter. Deer are excellent jumpers and swimmers. They eat leaves, grasses and soft fruit. Apart from hunting, one of the most common causes of injury or death for deer is by collision with vehicles.
